Nitrous oxide for anxious and sensitive patients

Nitrous oxide analgesia can be used to supplement local anaesthesia when treating anxious and sensitive patients, in order to put them into a kind of twilight sleep or state of relaxation. Nitrous oxide is a non-allergenic gas with an analgesic, pain-relieving, and sedating, calming effect. Its sedating, anxiety-relieving property puts anxious and sensitive patients into a trance-like state. Sensitivity to pain is clearly reduced. Patients remain responsive during the procedure. The gag reflex and swallowing reflexes typical of many anxious patients are almost entirely suppressed under nitrous oxide.
