Vitamin D: new guideline advises against testing on suspicion

On 9 February 2026 the first German-language S3 guideline on the significance of vitamin D for implants and bone grafting was presented. Twenty-three professional societies, organisations and patient representatives worked on it under the lead of the DGI and DGZMK.

The core statement: a vitamin D deficiency can impair the success of a procedure – but on the current evidence it does not justify routine testing or supplementation in all patients.

What is recommended instead is a targeted approach: testing where there is a recognisable risk profile, where implants have been lost early for no clear reason, or where inflammation around the implant keeps recurring.

For patients that is a useful orientation. If you are offered a vitamin D test and a supplement as a matter of course before a procedure, you are entitled to ask why.
